Graeme Allemeersch:
To me, earthenware in the finished state seems
soft and friendly. This is a purely emotional response to
the medium. The warm reddish colour of the bare clay makes
a pleasing contrast to the majolica glaze. Conflicting elements
in balance.
Lower earthenware firing temperatures make available the large
range of bright, immediate colours that I enjoy. The majolica
glaze with overglaze decoration allows effective use of colour
and easily permits expression of my interest in pattern decoration.
Stylized leaf and flower shapes are the predominant motifs
in most of the patterns used.
From year to year the forms, surface treatments, and intents
may change, but the basic need to produce a useful object
remains. Therefore, my work is usually vessel oriented with
a specific function intended. A well conceived vessel has
the ability to increase our appreciation of that which it
contains. It is an aid to the celebration of daily life. A
useful vessel may also give cause for aesthetic pleasure when
not serving its' use function.
Making pots is a personal journey, an exploration of the nature
of form and decoration in pottery. By using strong, simple
forms with a decoration that activates the surface, I try
to unify the form and decoration in a way that imparts a feeling
of joy and movement to the work.
