Janet Roberts:
I have painted the landscape for 40 years, but
never tire of it. Interestingly, I did not paint the first
one till after I had graduated with a degree in Fine Arts
from Indiana University in 1966.
Even though I now am working on a series of still lifes
using mannequins, costumes and masks, as well as a series
incorporating old photos, I continue to go back to landscape
painting, as in painting nature, I find a special freedom
within that subject matter. Within the boundaries of landscape,
I feel I can pursue my interest in defining and exploring
shapes, edges, the weight and mass of trees and foliage, extraordinary
color, and all those elements of painting that might be thought
of as abstract. For whatever reasons, I seem to need the safety
net of a traditional genre in order to push my creative boundaries.
In addition to being mindful of the underlying abstract
armature of my compositions, I also am aware of the importance
of mark-making on the canvas surface. These marks must be
able to stand alone, thereby giving purpose to their existence.
I delight in small areas of visual drama—those pieces
of the whole, that might be thought of as a sentence within
a novel.
