Tara Bogart:
Raised by a village of artists; dialogue about art
and especially photography has been there for as long as I
can remember! As a young girl the coffee table books were
by photographers such as Cindy Sherman and Duane Michael's.
I became fascinated with still photos that tell stories and
began trying to create my own stories with a 35mm camera and
black and white film. Pretty soon I was trying to “suspend
disbelief” by choosing the objects that I included in
my shots. Using vintage clothing and furniture I would try
to create stories of travel or ideas about wanting to travel.
I have always looked for people to photograph and when the
right person comes along I start to create “their”
story. They are the seed and the energy of the idea. I do
not believe it is always about some artist’s dark thing,
and I am never exercising demons. I want the images to be
beautiful, just like I see them in my mind. I take my work
seriously, but the themes are usually light-hearted. Now,
instead of taking a model, props, and furniture to the perfect
location, I can photograph the elements separately and put
them together exactly the way I want. I can make my dreams
show up on paper!
